Did you know that according to the National Fire Protection Association, dryers cause nearly 3,000 home fires per year — and the leading cause is failure to clean? If you live in Barrie or Simcoe County and haven’t thought about your dryer’s maintenance in a while, this guide is for you.
At AFIXSERVICE, we repair dryers across Barrie, Innisfil, Collingwood, Penetanguishene, and the surrounding Simcoe County area every week. A huge portion of the calls we get could have been prevented with simple, regular maintenance. Here’s everything you need to know.
Why Dryer Maintenance Matters
Your dryer works hard — especially if you have kids, pets, or an active family lifestyle. Over time, lint builds up in the lint trap, exhaust duct, and inside the drum housing. This restricts airflow, makes your dryer work harder, raises energy bills, and — most dangerously — creates a serious fire hazard.
Beyond fire risk, a poorly maintained dryer will:
- Take longer to dry clothes (double cycles = double hydro bills)
- Wear out heating elements and motors faster
- Break down more frequently, leading to costly repairs
- Shorten the overall lifespan of the appliance
Most dryers have a lifespan of 10–15 years. With proper maintenance, yours can hit that upper end. Without it, you might be replacing it in 6–8.
Step 1: Clean the Lint Trap After Every Load
This is the simplest step and the one most people skip occasionally. The lint trap (usually a pull-out filter in the front door frame or on top of the dryer) should be cleaned after every single load.
How to clean it:
- Pull out the lint screen
- Peel the lint off by hand into the garbage
- Every month, wash the screen with warm soapy water and a soft brush — dryer sheet residue builds up and reduces airflow even when the screen looks clean
- Let it dry completely before reinserting
Step 2: Clean the Dryer Vent Duct (At Least Once a Year)
The vent duct carries hot, moist air and lint from the back of your dryer to the outside of your home. This duct needs to be cleaned at least once a year — more often if you do 5+ loads per week.
Signs your duct needs cleaning:
- Clothes take more than one cycle to dry
- Dryer exterior feels very hot to the touch
- Musty or burning smell during operation
- Visible lint accumulation around the exterior vent cover
How to clean it:
- Disconnect the dryer from the power (and gas if applicable)
- Pull the dryer away from the wall and disconnect the duct from the back
- Use a dryer vent cleaning brush kit (available at any hardware store) to push through from both ends
- Vacuum out the loosened lint
- Check the exterior vent flap — make sure it opens freely and isn’t blocked by lint, bird nests, or debris (this is especially important in Barrie winters)
- Reconnect everything securely
If your vent run is long or has multiple turns, consider hiring a professional dryer vent cleaning service.
Step 3: Check the Drum and Interior
Every few months, wipe down the inside of the drum with a damp cloth. Look for:
- Stains from tissues or crayons left in pockets
- Rubber seals (gaskets) around the drum door — make sure they’re intact and not cracking
- Small items caught between the drum and the cabinet (coins, underwire from bras, small socks)
Items caught inside can damage the drum, create noise, or even cause electrical issues.
Step 4: Inspect the Exhaust Hose
The flexible hose connecting your dryer to the wall duct should be:
- Made of rigid or semi-rigid metal, not plastic or foil (flammable materials are a fire hazard and not up to code in Ontario)
- As short and straight as possible — every bend reduces airflow by up to 25%
- Free of kinks, crushing, or holes
If yours is the old-style foil accordion hose, replace it with a rigid metal duct — it’s safer, lasts longer, and improves performance.
Step 5: Level the Dryer
A dryer that isn’t level will vibrate excessively, wearing out drum bearings, drive belts, and motor mounts much faster. Check with a bubble level placed on top of the unit. Most dryers have adjustable leveling feet — turn them clockwise to raise, counter-clockwise to lower.
When to Call a Professional in Barrie
Even with great maintenance, parts wear out. Call a certified appliance technician if you notice:
- The dryer runs but produces no heat (or insufficient heat)
- Unusual grinding, squealing, or thumping sounds
- The drum won’t spin
- The dryer shuts off mid-cycle
- Your hydro bill has spiked without explanation
At AFIXSERVICE, our TSSA-certified technicians can diagnose and repair your dryer the same day in Barrie, Innisfil, Angus, Midland, Collingwood, and across Simcoe County. We offer upfront pricing — no surprise bills.
